About Me

I’m a trader who loves his job.  I’ll trade any market that moves, and have been trading since I was a 17 year old kid who caught the huge 1973 soybean move and was hooked.  I trade a lot of futures, stocks, financials, currencies, options, equities, and bonds.   I generally am in a market for a short time, however, I will stay in a spread for months if need be.

My downtime from trading allows me to surf, play poker, add to my extensive art collection, and just have fun.  I am a conservative, and like to check out liberal blogs.  Some of them are pretty good…even if they are rather misguided.

I’m dispassionate about my trading and money in general, never fall in love with a position, and am willing to change my mind 400 times a day. I tend to go for the base hits, and not the home runs.  The purpose of this blog is to chronicle my trading days, good and bad.  I might throw in a little politics here and there, and I might give y’all a sneak peek at my art collection.

I hope you enjoy my musings.  I like to discuss common sense, as common sense will make you money in the markets, and will help limit your losses. All of the information needed to make money in the market is contained in the tale of the tape.  Making money is simple, but over-analyzing a market will kill you and cost you money in the long run.

I never take stock tips, nor will I ever give them, for obvious reasons.  If you develop your own thinking about the market, use common sense, and don’t take tips, you’ll probably make money.

Remember that you don’t make money in the market from fundamental and technical analysis, you make money by actively buying and selling the market.

I live in sunny Florida, in a funky little beach house.

My lovely wife recently died from cancer at the tender age of 49.  She was the my best friend, and words cannot describe my loss.

My son is in his first year at Yale after a successful four years at Phillips Exeter Academy. He’s majoring in Latin and Classic Greek.

I am a Freemason.

I am an amateur radio operator.

I have a PhD in physical chemistry from Northwestern University.

The objectivist philosophy of Ayn Rand is the guiding moral force in my life.

When I’m not doing anything else, you’ll usually find me surfing at our local break, or traveling over to the other coast for some waves.

Art is my passion, and we’ve built an extensive collection over the past 25 years.  Although we mainly collect drawings from masters, I’ve been hitting the auctions at Sotheby’s recently, and have been adding some paintings.  Currently, we have a moderate collection, and I’ve posted pictures of some of the works throughout this blog.

I play a pretty mean guitar.

I’m a family kind of guy, and put family over all.

I have had a very interesting life, and at age 51, feel better than I did at 30.

Jeff

  1. For a translator, this is nice to read. It is full of these little wordies that the American language creates every day. It is a pity that I cannot take an interest in markets. However, for years now I have been trying, trying and trying to get a better idea of how the US currency works in the world. Would you know of a good page about that? I did find an excellent place at http://wfhummel.net/. His name is Hummel and he is a former NASA engineer who studied money matters on the side. But he says alwmost nothing on the international picture. I would be very thankful for a hint. I don’t know anybody in this field. –

  2. Dude, keep surfing til the day you die. Keeps you young. Geezers rule! Many a lesson for trading in the waves as well.

  4. Base hits versus home runs - you described my style of trading. Thanks for the link and I’ll link back. After reading your “about me” page I see mine needs some more detail.

  7. Jeff,

Thanks for the comment at my blog and the link on your blog roll; much appreciated. I, honestly, am not that knowledgeable about commodities. I have a couple of pieces on commodities on my blog, but really elementary stuff. I look forward to following you and learning a thing or two.

Interestingly, it seems that we are both in Florida and are surfers. You’re the first person that I’ve heard echo my love for surfing at night. I get grief over it from everyone - ‘that’s when the sharks feed’ they say….I ran into a few manatees in the surf, but no sharks.

  8. Hey Rich,

Where are you located in Florida? Where do you surf?

Surfing’s far more important than trading…..I’d blow good trading session if the waves were a 6′glassy ground swell.

  9. Jeff,

I’m very sorry to hear about your wife. My thoughts are with you and your family.

I’d love to see in more detail what and how you are trading. I have been working for over 2 years in a web startup called Covestor (http://www.covestor.com). I think you should look at it.

  10. Hi Jeff,

Seen you posting on HumbleMoney and have resonated with your views.
Came over for a squiz at your blog…..some points i note:

    - you’re a baby boomer skeg head (Aussie for surfer).
I grew up in Brisbane, and surfed from 12 to 28. Don’t get out anymore, but lived and loved it and my heaven will have a great goofy point break.
Here’s a link to surf cams across Australia.
http://www.coastalwatch.com (click the states on the left hand side to get specific beaches. Qld is north east coast where I live)
Also has stuff of Bali and Fiji. We’re coming into Winter and swell is generally small <4ft but clean offshores.

    - conservative Freemason. interesting. Not popular in Australia for the last 30 years but I sense that’ll change in the commodities wars ahead. Australia would have benefited from a bunch of Freemasons drafting up a Declaration of Independence too.

    - PhD in physical chemistry…..now there’s some synchronicity….was just reading the trader blog http://www.jesse-livermore.com/ last night and he is a PhD in physical chemistry too.

    - art collection? hmmmmm…..never got into it….it’s a very personal thing….and what appeals one month might not the next. lots of collective unconscious driving what one appreciates from month to month year to year, methinks….besides, I’d rather look out the window at rainforest and surf :)

Will have a look around your website. you have an oblique combination of interests there…..I am always curious to see how the unconventional think.

  11. Bruce,

Thanks for stopping by my little quadrant of cyberspace, and thanks for the links.
Hope you can get out and catch a few waves in the future.

  12. Thx for responding Jeff…..If I may be so bold as to offer my 2 cents worth on the harsher side of life on planet earth, I can speak highly (personally and professionally) of the benefits of weight lifting. It is often the trick to up testosterone and adrenalin enough to help the mind courageously forge a way forwards, towards a distant light, no matter how faint….especiallt when you accentuate pushing away rather than pulling towards….(you’ll get what I mean) Rolfing and Reiki have commercialized this stuff but it is still fundamental truth.

The real corker is to find some psychic ‘weight lifters’ to hang out with. Few and far between. But don’t underestimate…gets your head, heart and gut sorted out quicker than most things.

    Onwards and Upwards

  15. Hello Jeff,
I’ve gone quite far back in your postings. My heartfelt sympathies for your loss of your wife. It’s terrible when someone young dies, someone so very close to you.
I’m just about a year away from my Mother’s death. I know it’s very different because she was elderly (95), but I had been looking after her in her last 12 declining years. It was a privilege to be there for her but so difficult.

I don’t understand your trading comments but I am interested in your art collection comments so I find that a curious mis. I have enjoyed seeing what you have posted from your art collection. You have a fine appreciation of drawing and it’s interesting to see your riskier choices (visually speaking) of elliptically spare drawings (the Toulouse Lautrec, the Matisse). It was hard to tell which artist painted your recent Impressionist acquisition because the picture on the post was too small to see well. Ditto for the two drawings in pencil or graphite, looking a lot more classic.
I shall check back in to your post one of these days.

  16. Hi Jeff-
I just found your blog via your comment on Snickollet (I lost my husband 10 months ago unexpectedly). I had no history of mental illness or depression, but definitely still found myself thinking suicidal thoughts. I did know, however, that I would never, ever act on them. If you find yourself thinking of HOW you would actively kill yourself, PLEASE tell someone and get some help. If you are just hoping to not wake up, things along those lines, know that these thoughts are (unfortunately) fairly common with widow(er)hood. I hope that this is at least marginally helpful for you.

I’m so sorry to hear about your wife. I wish your son the best at Yale- the years we spent in New Haven were some of my favorite.
