Trading, surfing, and my extensive art collection discussed here

About Me

with 67 comments

I’m a trader who loves his job.  I’ll trade any market that moves, and have been trading since I was a 17 year old kid who caught the huge 1973 soybean move and was hooked.  I trade a lot of futures, stocks, financials, currencies, options, equities, and bonds.   I generally am in a market for a short time, however, I will stay in a spread for months if need be.

My downtime from trading allows me to surf, play poker, add to my extensive art collection, and just have fun.  I am an Objectivist, and like to check out political blogs.  Some of them are pretty good…even if they are rather misguided. I’m an avid reader, seeking seemingly obscure literature that makes life more interesting.

I’m dispassionate about my trading and money in general, never fall in love with a position, and am willing to change my mind 400 times a day. I tend to go for the doubles, and not the home runs, which is my biggest character flaw.  The purpose of this blog is to chronicle my trading days, good and bad.  I might throw in a little politics here and there, a little Objectivism, and I might give y’all a sneak peek at my art collection.

I hope you enjoy my musings.  I like to discuss common sense, as common sense will make you money in the markets, and might help limit your losses. All of the information needed to make money in the market is contained in the tale of the tape and in scientific analysis.  Making money is simple, but over-analyzing a market will kill you and cost you money in the long run.

I never take stock tips, nor will I ever give them, for obvious reasons.  If you develop your own thinking about the market, use common sense, and don’t take tips, you’ll probably make money. If you buy and hold stocks, you’ll probably make money in the long run.

Remember that you don’t make money in the futures market from fundamental and technical analysis, you make money by actively buying and selling, and being right.  One can have a position that’s profitable and still be wrong.

I live in sunny Florida, in a funky little beach house. I’m in the slow process of moving to New York.

My lovely wife recently died from cancer at the tender age of 49.  She was the my best friend, and words cannot describe my loss.

My son is starting his third year of college at Trinity College, Cambridge Univ. He went to Yale for two years, and before that had a successful four years at Phillips Exeter Academy. He’s majoring in Latin and Classic Greek.

I sometimes write articles over at Victor Niederhoffer’s website, Daily Speculations.

I am a Freemason and am active in both Scottish Rite, York Rite, and am a Shriner.  One purpose of Freemasonry is not to rehabilitate men, but to make good men better.

I am an amateur radio operator.

I have a PhD in physical chemistry.

The objectivist philosophy of Ayn Rand is the guiding moral force in my life.

When I’m not doing anything else, you’ll usually find me surfing at our local break, or traveling over to the other coast for some waves.

Art is my passion, and we’ve built an extensive collection over the past 27 years.  Although we mainly collect drawings from masters, I’ve been hitting the auctions at Sotheby’s recently, and have been adding some paintings.  Currently, we have a great collection, getting better all the time, and I’ve posted pictures of some of the works throughout this blog.

I used to play a pretty mean guitar.

I’m a family kind of guy, and put family over all.

I have had a very interesting life, and at age 53, feel better than I did at 30.

  1. For a translator, this is nice to read. It is full of these little wordies that the American language creates every day. It is a pity that I cannot take an interest in markets. However, for years now I have been trying, trying and trying to get a better idea of how the US currency works in the world. Would you know of a good page about that? I did find an excellent place at http://wfhummel.net/. His name is Hummel and he is a former NASA engineer who studied money matters on the side. But he says alwmost nothing on the international picture. I would be very thankful for a hint. I don’t know anybody in this field. –

  7. Jeff,

Thanks for the comment at my blog and the link on your blog roll; much appreciated. I, honestly, am not that knowledgeable about commodities. I have a couple of pieces on commodities on my blog, but really elementary stuff. I look forward to following you and learning a thing or two.

Interestingly, it seems that we are both in Florida and are surfers. You’re the first person that I’ve heard echo my love for surfing at night. I get grief over it from everyone – ‘that’s when the sharks feed’ they say….I ran into a few manatees in the surf, but no sharks.

Where are you located in Florida? Where do you surf?

Surfing’s far more important than trading…..I’d blow good trading session if the waves were a 6′glassy ground swell.

I’d love to see in more detail what and how you are trading. I have been working for over 2 years in a web startup called Covestor (http://www.covestor.com). I think you should look at it.

  10. Hi Jeff,

Seen you posting on HumbleMoney and have resonated with your views.
Came over for a squiz at your blog…..some points i note:

    - you’re a baby boomer skeg head (Aussie for surfer).
I grew up in Brisbane, and surfed from 12 to 28. Don’t get out anymore, but lived and loved it and my heaven will have a great goofy point break.
Here’s a link to surf cams across Australia.
http://www.coastalwatch.com (click the states on the left hand side to get specific beaches. Qld is north east coast where I live)
Also has stuff of Bali and Fiji. We’re coming into Winter and swell is generally small <4ft but clean offshores.

    - conservative Freemason. interesting. Not popular in Australia for the last 30 years but I sense that’ll change in the commodities wars ahead. Australia would have benefited from a bunch of Freemasons drafting up a Declaration of Independence too.

    - PhD in physical chemistry…..now there’s some synchronicity….was just reading the trader blog http://www.jesse-livermore.com/ last night and he is a PhD in physical chemistry too.

    - art collection? hmmmmm…..never got into it….it’s a very personal thing….and what appeals one month might not the next. lots of collective unconscious driving what one appreciates from month to month year to year, methinks….besides, I’d rather look out the window at rainforest and surf :)

Will have a look around your website. you have an oblique combination of interests there…..I am always curious to see how the unconventional think.

  12. Thx for responding Jeff…..If I may be so bold as to offer my 2 cents worth on the harsher side of life on planet earth, I can speak highly (personally and professionally) of the benefits of weight lifting. It is often the trick to up testosterone and adrenalin enough to help the mind courageously forge a way forwards, towards a distant light, no matter how faint….especiallt when you accentuate pushing away rather than pulling towards….(you’ll get what I mean) Rolfing and Reiki have commercialized this stuff but it is still fundamental truth.

The real corker is to find some psychic ‘weight lifters’ to hang out with. Few and far between. But don’t underestimate…gets your head, heart and gut sorted out quicker than most things.

  15. Hello Jeff,
I’ve gone quite far back in your postings. My heartfelt sympathies for your loss of your wife. It’s terrible when someone young dies, someone so very close to you.
I’m just about a year away from my Mother’s death. I know it’s very different because she was elderly (95), but I had been looking after her in her last 12 declining years. It was a privilege to be there for her but so difficult.

I don’t understand your trading comments but I am interested in your art collection comments so I find that a curious mis. I have enjoyed seeing what you have posted from your art collection. You have a fine appreciation of drawing and it’s interesting to see your riskier choices (visually speaking) of elliptically spare drawings (the Toulouse Lautrec, the Matisse). It was hard to tell which artist painted your recent Impressionist acquisition because the picture on the post was too small to see well. Ditto for the two drawings in pencil or graphite, looking a lot more classic.
I shall check back in to your post one of these days.

  16. Hi Jeff-
I just found your blog via your comment on Snickollet (I lost my husband 10 months ago unexpectedly). I had no history of mental illness or depression, but definitely still found myself thinking suicidal thoughts. I did know, however, that I would never, ever act on them. If you find yourself thinking of HOW you would actively kill yourself, PLEASE tell someone and get some help. If you are just hoping to not wake up, things along those lines, know that these thoughts are (unfortunately) fairly common with widow(er)hood. I hope that this is at least marginally helpful for you.

I’m so sorry to hear about your wife. I wish your son the best at Yale- the years we spent in New Haven were some of my favorite.

  19. I am happy to see that you are here again, because last time I looked WordPress said that “the authors have decided to delete this blog”, and so I knew that you were having a hard time.

Now I was wondering what to think of that new ’s in the header, considering that all-American dilemma of “its”, “it’s” and recently, as a new way out, “its’”. Did you put in that ’s at your boy’s suggestion?

I am really glad you are back, because all this time I would have liked to see how the US dollar circus would be reflected on your blog.

  20. No. Sorry. Now I see, it is the same problem as before : I cannot see your header complete. It is partly hidden by your sidebar. So normally I see “Master of the Univer”.

Last time I saw “Master of the Universe’s”, which I thought was an erroneous analogy to a “a car of Peter’s” genitive.

But now, today, I see “Master of the Universe’s W” with “W” meaning probably “web”.

Maybe your header is for large-screen monitors.

I’ve been trading for about two years now and surfing regularly (I first surfed probably 15 years ago) for about 3 years — ever since I moved to San Diego. The parallels between the two arenas are uncanny. Rule 1 = Never turn your back on the Ocean/Market! Anyways, sounds like you’re catching some good rides in both worlds. Let me know if you ever come out to Sunny SD.

I will scalp if the opportunity presents itself, but prefer to day/week trade on positions that aren’t spread. I do like to protect winning trades with options, and frequently go into the options market to hedge my risk. As for software, I use multivariate analysis that gives me good indications of direction in the short term. The rest is money management.

Can you provide resources for understanding spreads and why they move? I am trying to understand the fundamental drivers of spreads but cannot find any comprehensive resources to study.

For example, why is now a bad time to place a bear spread in wheat (WN9/WH9) right now? At least that is my feeling.

Jeff, I hope you understand the foolishness of this pursuit. There’s no such thing as an edge because the markets are too efficient.

There’s little doubt that your 30+ year record of trading success is a classic example of suvivorship bias.

  57. Dear Jeff,

Thanks for this great page. I ended up here after searching some blogs on Objectivism and just looked up at the clock to realize an hour has gone by. I spent some time at the Gutenberg Project reading Lincoln, quite a while viewing, with jaw dropped in awe, your fantastic collection of drawings and paintings and I have concluded that, well, I’m a fan.
Regarding Objectivism, it has been the ‘guiding moral force in my life’ as well since I began studying Ayn Rand’s work in my early twenties. Now, a decade later, I find I’ve not spent as much time considering the points of opposition to her philosophy as I’d have liked to.
If you find you have a free moment and the inclination, I would be interested to know what persons you think make the strongest arguments against Objectivism. I’m just trying to play devil’s advocate with myself and would appreciate the suggestions of someone like you.
Anyway, thanks for all the great resources here. I’ll be visiting again soon.

  63. Hello,

Not sure what section to place this question. Can you provide any insight as to why the beans spreads, like X9 / N0 or H0 / K0, are moving the way they are currently moving? Do they tend to revert back to a carrying market at some point since they are the same calendar year?

  65. Hi Jeff,

I have recently visited your website and am writing to try and arrange a quick discussion on the information you currently show as I recognize synergies between our respective websites and an opportunity we can both benefit from.

My name is James Stafford and I run the website OilPrice.com, where we focus on finance within the commodity sectors and after having researched your various pages I wanted to make you aware that we welcome companies such as yours to publish (at no cost) our Energy & Commodity Price Charts, Quotes and Data Panels, which cover: Crude Oil, Gold, Silver, Natural Gas, etc…
Please take a look at http://www.oilprice.com/charts.php to see what is available.

We have only recently launched the site which is why you may not have heard of us, but I would like to clarify that the information is very well presented and doesn’t carry adverts or anything else that would impair the quality for your visitors.
Our development team have also looked over your site and believe all the price formats we offer would be a great fit.

Hopefully you’ll get a chance to take a look at what we do and agree that our free data greatly complements your site and would also be of use to your visitors.

I’d also like to mention that we are looking for contributors to submit articles, so if this is of interest to you please do get in touch. Even though we are a fairly new site we have a PR 6 and are getting over 2,000 visitors a day (and this number is growing rapidly.) We are also creating a writers section which will feature prominently on the homepage.

Should you have any questions or would like to discuss anything I’ve mentioned please do get in touch..

    Yours sincerely,

    James Stafford

  67. Sir, I contacted you before to get a copy of Professional Turf Bettors…what a great book.

I am a former investment banker in Calgary, Alberta (only surfed 2 times both at Waikki, but kick ass on a snowboard…). I dropped the biz last year to go to school to study geology. I met so many geo dudes in my money pumping days (ps I was futures licensed back in my ib days – hedged for some comps, and had the DMS – derivative mkt specialist – designation from our security school CSI, so please do not worry about difficult terms) so i trade my own acct these days to keep the same lifestyle I had as I study rocks…

Thats the background, the reason I contacted you is I have been asking people I view as successful traders 2 questions
    1) whats your number 1 rule?
    2) what is the one mistake (in the mkts) you wish you never made?

Sir I understand if you never want to divulge that info, but I appreciate any info.

Ps I started writing this blog to keep me in touch with stuff and expand my views.. I’d be thrilled if you viewed it at least once…
