We didn’t go to the Mets game. Instead, we found a great restaurant on 35 W. 64th Street called Picholine. The service was first rate, and the food was very good with the exception of my main course. My companion raved about her meal, and that was the most important thing. The restaurant was almost empty, with the exception of a table of Japanese tourists. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the Palindrome was sitting across from us, holding court with a couple of whales. Since the restaurant was so empty, we managed to catch a good portion of their conversation and it was very interesting. I was tempted to take a picture, but decided not to risk the wrath of his security. Afterward, we caught a show at Lincoln Center that was outside. It was the Midsummer Night Swing featuring Kermit Ruffins. The band was very tight and the only thing that kept me from dancing was my ankle, otherwise I would have danced my legs off.

Very interesting night.

I cannot believe the action in the beans….very crazy. I’m keeping an eye on the gold/platinum spread for the future. There might be some trading opportunities there.

  1. “We didn’t go to the Mets game.”

You didn’t miss much. Ugh, 0-8.

“The Palindrome was sitting across from us, holding court with a couple of whales.”

OK, I’ll bite, who is The Palindrome? Can you at least hint at it?

“I cannot believe the action in the beans…very crazy.”

We’ve had regular rain here all summer, including an all-day super-soaker for Independence Day. No drought in site.

  2. Kevin,

He’s in his late 70’s, Jewish, Hungarian, huge trader, very liberal, broke the pound and the Bank of England in 91, and his last name is a five letter wort that starts and ends with the letter s. Is that enough hints?

  3. Jeff I also wonder who the Palindrome is?

  4. I was going to guess Rush Limbaugh until you said “very liberal.”

  5. You should have gone up to him and told him that his last name is not regular (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palindrome#Computation_theory) Okay, really you should have asked him which society he was going to open next :)

I grew up in a town that is perhaps only known for its palendromic nature: Yreka, CA.

  6. Hi Jeff, that’s some good, swanky looking (and sounding) food being served at the restaurant.

I’m so distant from trading these days that when you mention the beans I think of cooking, and when you talk of the gold-plat spread I start thinking what I am going to spread on my breakfast criossant … it’s got to be Nutella, me thinks.

  7. @Dave Bacon:
I was stumped by your comment until I realized that there’s a cool bakery in your home town that makes fried dough in the shape of mobius strips!

Also, on the wiki discussion of palindrome parsing, I disagree with the statement that it is theoretically impossible for a computer with a finite amount of memory to reliably test for palindromes. I think I devised a simple brute force algorithm that is pathetically easy for strings with an odd number of letters. Strings with an even number of letters is a bit harder, but can be solved easily too (without recursion). Shoot me an email if you want to discuss this further.

  8. Rocky,

Mobius strips make a good vehicle for a proposition bet……so many ways to skin a cat.

  9. Jeff:
I’m not familiar with those. Try me?

Q: Why did the chicken cross the Mobius strip?
A: To get to the other … er, um….

  10. I went to a Mobius strip joint once. They didn’t have the kind I was looking for, but I must say, things in there were pretty twisted.

  11. Ok I’m very interested.. Must be the thought of getting information you aren’t supposed to, what did you hear and are able to share?

Last I heard GS was talking about an inverted square root recovery.. Had to get out the pen and paper to work that one out :)
