The pitfalls of public education
Laurel Kenner has a great post on education. This hit home, as I was always one of those square pegs the system tried to fit into a round hole. When they couldn’t succeed, they literally tried to destroy me.
Brazil is closer than you think, especially if the incompetents in power have their way.

Jeff,
This is the best thing I’ve read in a long, long time! It really excited me, as it has congealed and organized some of my own long-held beliefs.
My father taught school for a very brief period of time when I was a baby, and left because of the system getting in the way of any teaching. For as long as I can remember, he’s bought and sold vintage instruments out of his unassuming home. I realize that he’s infused me with some of the attitudes I hold against the institution of public school (and institutions in general). Now, I am at last proud to be a high school dropout!
On another note, I feel as though I’ve figured out a puzzle of sorts…maybe I’m wrong?

Steph,
The system is stacked against kids who are really smart but are square pegs that won’t fit into their round little holes. Take it from me, if they can’t squeeze you into their mold, they will try to personally destroy you.I know this from experience, as schooling did that to me my entire scholastic career…..which went on far too long.
Although I went to private schools and had much the same experience, public schools are just factories with union labor doing the teaching…enough said.

Agreed! I never fit the mold either, and it took me a long time to realize that it was all of them with the problem, not me!
Here’s to how far we’ve come. Happy Fourth!
