Five Summer Stories

I love everything about this surf flick, ever since it was released in 1972.  I remember when it first came out on VHS back in the late 80’s and thought I died and went to heaven.  The footage shown in this clip shows Pipeline (a top surf break on the North Shore at Oahu) at it’s best.  This video passes the test of time.  The Beach Boys tune isn’t half bad either.

Enjoy,

Jeff

  1. This reminds me of my water polo days (I played varsity and city league). Once I helped organize a fund-raiser dance party at Rooster’s Cafe at Carleton University, and rented a reel and projector and played surfing videos such as these as a back-drop – to, you guessed it, a large helping of Beach Boys music. I remember it being a fun party, about equally balanced between water polo players and cute young women (that I had to round up). That would have to have been early eighties – 83 or 84.

  2. George,

Water polo….that’s a tough game. I’ve surfed some pretty big places, including Pipeline, and never came as close to drowning as I did playing water polo with a bunch of hard core players. I was out of my element, and they nailed me. There’s market parallels to be sure….playing outside your game:)

  3. I just got back home from the SurfExpo in Orlando, and was talking to Rory Russell about the re-launch of the Lightning Bolt brand, and it brought back some fond memories of my years on Oahu in the late 70’s.

Five Summer Stories is a classic film. I wish more of these type surf films would be re-mastered and released on DVD.

  4. Mark, send me a PM through watsurf(nospam)@comcast.net. I can get you a whole catalog of bootleg old surf flicks in DVD from the 70’s for $10 each. Tell me your address, and I’ll hook you up with a list. His list is amazing. His customer service is excellent.
