Getting ready

Filed under: Futures, commodities, family, surfing, trader — Tags: , , — masteroftheuniverse @ 7:44 pm

I’m getting ready for my trip to NYC, and am pretty excited about it.  It’s going to be great to get the hell out of here for awhile.  I’ve been so bad about answering calls, e-mails, and regular daily maintenance.  Perhaps this trip will clear my head….I certainly hope it lightens my pocket book.

There’s a swell building up in the gulf, and there should be good, surfable waves by early evening.  If we get waves, I’ll be all over them.  Surfing, music, my art, and books seem to be my only pleasures these days.  Perhaps, after myable vacation(s), I will be able to reclaim my edge.

I did go over to play poker at a friend of a friend’s house last night.  The game was rather impromptu, and nobody at the game was any good at all.  I played a passive-aggressive game, and made sure that I was the second biggest winner at the table….I had to dump a couple of hands to do that.  I don’t like to go into a new game and play hard, as when I do that, I tend to not get invited back.  My thoughts on poker….if you don’t know, or can’t figure out the odds on every permutation and combination of every possible hand or draw, you have no business being in the game.  Poker is a game of skill and money management, with the money management part often overlooked.  I don’t like to gamble anymore, and poker is one of the last games around that’s not a gamble.

  1. The weather here has cleared - colder for now (H 60 or so) - maybe a little rain on Thurs

There are a couple of great shows at the Met, and if you haven’t seen the Impressionist rooms since they were reopened, you’re due for a delightful surprise - the lighting is the best I’ve ever seen in a museum, and I’ve seen a lot - colors one never imagined were on the canvas, with a clarity in many cases that hasn’t been seen since they were last in sunlight.

Avoid the cafeteria - horrible since they moved to the basement - Petrie Court Cafe OK, but best is Trustees Dining Room (someone at Sotheby’s can get you a pass - it’s only open for high paying members during the week).

Don’t forget the Frick - the visiting Parmigianino goes back to Naples after Thurs, but the usual stars are still there.

The Euro-tourists are thick on the ground, worse than ever. Lots of to-and-fro trying to figure out the subway - just like me in London or Paris.

    Have a safe trip in.

  2. Fatbear,

    Thanks for the suggestions :)

The Met is on my list of things to do. I haven’t been to the Frick in years, and hope to squeeze them in also. What I really can’t wait for is to take a nice stroll in Central Park…..I love to watch the parade of people.

Along with Sotheby’s, I have to go visit some dealers who are old friends. They know the art world inside and out. I’m a spectator in their turf.

As for the subway, I don’t do subways ever since I got mugged in one back in 1980.

    Thanks for stopping by.

    Jeff
